But it might be a bigger mistake to infest a brand new tank with problems from the last mistake....just saying

just cook the LR little by little. Take a 5gal bucket put live rock in it and fill it with new saltwater, with a heater and bubbler for like a month changing water evey 2 weeks then after the month just run RODI water in if for 2 weeks. Thats what I did in my friends tank and he has never had a problem with algea

Very true... Maybe I should remove a few pieces that I want to use as base rock and let them dry, that way I can put them in the tank dry when I start the cycle.
The others I will dry out, then slowly add them to the system. My wife is tired of having a trash can on our patio with rock in it...

Wouldn't running straight RODI kill off any life? Algae included?

Yea but I thought you were ok with starting with non live rock it was just the cost. IMO starting fresh and 100% dead and letting your tank cycle is the best way.

I have a lot of life in my rocks that I dont want to lose. But.. I would rather not deal with bubble algae in a tank I can barely reach into.

Re: Sandman's 187g Tank Build
Quick question... Will a short bath in a heavily saturated vinegar/water bath kill bubble algae off powerheads?
I had a powerhead go out and I need to use one from my 65 elsewhere and dont want to spread the algae.

Exactly, think about all the trouble you could potentially save yourself from. Even tho their is no guarantee you wont get algae after all is said and done. Just on paper it looks more promising.

So if have the plumbing cut, in place, and ready to be glued. Once I get these braced I will glue and fill with tap water for the water test.
The 1" pipe in the middle is the return line. I am going to use flex hose to attach to my return pump.

Looking good. Great planning. Just an observation on my part of past experience with a LFS. If you are bringing livestock from the tank with bubble algae, you will most likely bring the spores from the water as well.

Thanks!
As for the water, I will be starting will all new water and letting the tank cycle for 4 weeks before I bring anything over. Gonna be a long month!

Re: Sandman's 187g Tank Build
The plumbing is complete and ready for a leak test!
As you can see, I added 3 manifolds; one for water change, one for a carbon reactor, and one for GFO.

it kind of looks like the shut offs in the wrong spots. do you have three ball valves in line of each other or do you have Ts connected end to end then the ball valves?

Re: Sandman's 187g Tank Build
The picture is very deceiving, and after looking at it again I understand the confusion. I have each ball valve on a T, not in a line. They just happen to be open. Might be easier to see with this picture.

Re: Sandman's 187g Tank Build
for the one that you're using for water changes, is it pumping water out? if so wouldn't you want another ball valve to conveniently close off the water supply going to the tank? that way you don't have to reset the valves that are restricting it back into the tank.

Re: Sandman's 187g Tank Build
Good point.. I figure if I don't get enough pressure by opening the valve, then I can always close off the fuge valve as a last resort. I believe I will have plenty of pressure to pump water out though. I am going to test it out tomorrow and will report back.

Re: Sandman's 187g Tank Build
So the plumbing failed the leak test. One of my return lines is leaking at the bulkhead/90 elbow junction. The leak is very small, so I am going to remove, re-tape, and test again. If it doesnt fix the problem I'll replace the bulkhead.

It's called Natures Ocean #1. Look up "live sand petco.". They sell it for 24.99 a bag, which is the cheapest I have seen.

Stand painted and in place!
The rock work is still a work in progress. The left side is complete. I am waiting until I take down the 60g to finish the right side.

Re: Sandman's 187g Tank Build
Ok, so I received my lights on Tuesday of this week. I put 3 AI Sol Blue over my tank.
In order to mount the 60" rail, I had to install 2 2x3 studs and drill through the rail. Oddly enough, the AI rails do not come with factory drilled holes to mount in this manner.
Lights in place, I still need to do something with the wires.
