75 gal Salt Build
Started with a very dirty 75 gal acrylic that I picked up complete from my sister in law for $200.00. Came with everything: Chiller (Pacific Coast Imports), Lights - JBJ 50/50 Compacts 48", tank (see below),Stand with canopy, Sump - 20 gal acrylic with 10k and Actinic fluorescent lighting fixture), protein skimmer (ASM), External return pump (Model #) , 200w heater, assorted powerheards/wavemaker, plus a tub full of assorted fish stuff like nets, tank cleaners etc.
Tank
75 gal Acrylic
48 ½ W x 18 ½ D x 21 3/8 H
Center overflow box (1.5” Return) ¾ Return Lines (x2)
Sanded the stand and canopy
Cleaned the tank
Stained the stand and canopy
I replaced the several powerheads that came with the tank with a
Polario 22ML wave maker / power head
20 gal sump, 1 over under baffle: Detritus Sponge
ASM Protein Skimmer: replaced Sedra 3500 w/G500 Needle Wheel Pump (Tom from ASM recommended this as a replacement)
Tunze Recircultaion Pump/Powerhead Silence 1073.040 (replaced the older external pump)
Cobalt Aquatics Accu-Therm 300 watt aquarium heater
NextReef MR1 Complete Media Reactor Kit (running gfo and carbon)
1 Gallon Bio Balls
1 Gallon Filter Floss
Replaced filter floss with filter baffle because of flow demand issues to the return pump
Lighting:
I replaced the 48" JBJ 50/50 power compacts that came with the tank with
(1) 56 white : 56 Blue LED 112 Watt 120V
(1) AI Vega
Substrate: (March 24, 2013)
50 lbs of Fiji Rock
15 lbs of Tonga / Marshall Rock
80 lbs Sand - Fiji Pink Arag-Alive! Live Reef Sand (Carib Sea) 20# sack (x4)
Built a pvc frame to support the rock work and the idea here was to keep the rocks from shifting and or collapsing.
Added a 275 gal tote (brand new food grade bottle wont leach)so that I can make RO/DI instead of buying it from LFS.
MxReefer added the RO/DI Unit. Thats 275 gal of RO/DI water @ 2ppm TDS
Added Red Sea Pro Salt to about 70 gal of RODI and filled the tank. Added Dr Tims bacteria to start the cycle.
(3/31/2013)
A week later added a couple fish (from my 6 gal nano)along with some softie and 5 chromis and 3 damsels from the LFS. At this point i'm only running one LED light on the right side as that's all i have.
(April 06,2013)
About another week or two later added A1 Vega on the left and then some acans and zoas, duncan, favia, etc that I got from MAX
April 9, 2013
Negligible algae outbreak starts up.
April 10, 2013
Goes from negligible to nuisance. Notice that some Chromis are missing.
April 11, 2013
Can see where this is heading. More chromis missing. Down to 1 (from 5).
Same Day I Order massive cleanup crew from ReefCleaners.org
60 assorted hermits
50 Blue Leg Hermits
100 Dwarf Cerith
5 Florida Cerith
5 Nassatius Vibex
5 Nerite Snails
5 Scarlet Hermit Crabs
2 Porcelain crabs
When I get home from work the hair algae is literally waving in the tank and about 5" long. I go to LFS and get 10 Mexican turbos, 10 Astreas, and a massive hermit and await the order from Reef Cleaners.
A few days later only one area has algae left. Next day its gone.
