    Vodka Dosing Empty Vodka Dosing

    Post by jeffmw12 Fri Oct 19, 2012 2:03 am

Thought this would be an interesting thread and did not see it on there. I recently have high nitrates (maybe because I like to feed a lot) so I was doing some research and came across it. Though i would give it a try and will post my results as I test my water. Started it three days ago. Anyone currently dose? Or just anything thoughts on the concept.
I'm currently dosing .3ml per day for one week.
Week two I will double the dose
    Week 3 add .5ml
And so on and so on until they get to zero
Than cut my final number in half and that is my maintaining number.

Ya I bought a handle for 10$ and a syringe for 2$ so I thought why not give it a try.

I tried it in the past but didn't really understand the process.

I know Sisterlemonpot doses and has a good grasp on it as he gave us a presentation about dosing at a club meeting.

Recently I started dosing Brightwell Aquatics Reef Biofuel in place of the the vodka. It seems to be working as my Nitrates are below 5 ppm and my corals seem to open up more. But it is more expensive than Vodka. I may see about switching over one day after I get a chance to pick SLP's brain some.

You can also do VSV. There are a few ways of carbon dosing, but vodka is one of the purest. I put some in my cycling tank to make sure the skimmer was working... which it was. lol

Been dosing vodka for 4 years, I currently dose 10ml a day with the bubble magus. it helps quite a bit, some down sides is that it promotes the growth of cyano bacteria and eventually it will dwindle the beneficial bacteria down to a few strands so you will have to add bacteria back to the tank to maintain the diversity.

The other thing that I noticed is that once the nitrates are where they need to be, vodka doesn't do anything for phosphates, so every now and then I will run some GFO to bring that down to the proper level.

How would you add bacteria to the tank?

You can buy it in a bottle.. microbacter 7 (MB7) made by brightwell or you can get it locally from Dr Tim, he has a long line of bacterias that will suit just about anything in your tank.
