i hate fish tanks.

I come home today and my tank is really low on water and like really low about a quarter of the tank is gone. Mind you I just did a water change yesterday. So I expect something failed with the overflow. Man was I wrong. I looked for about 30 mins trying to figure out were all the water had gone and I kicked of my flip flops and stepped on the soaking wet carpet. Still couldn't figure out were it was coming from. So I looked around some more and find that one of the corners of the sump had ruptured. And was the cause of the leak. Any ideas how this could have happened? So now I just got done putting the skimmer and everything back in the dt just to get back up and running. Now it's time to go to bed and work on it tomorrow after work. Thankfully nothing died.

What did. You do with it? Lol that sump lasted 2.5 tanks! You shouldn't have taken it apart.

One of the corners ruptured. It didn't split at the seam it looks like it was kicked.

well you're not supposed to kick it to get it under the tank?

I think we have all had incidents with our tanks...whether its a flood or a crash where you lose all your corals! Consider yourself lucky as there was no livestock loss.

Lol. It's all good now. For now I threw the skimmer back in the tank and all is well. I will look at repairing or making a New sump. Any comments or suggestions on a plywood sump. Back and sides plywood and front acrylic. I know you have to epoxy coat/paint the plywood. Anybody attempted this yet?

Glass is definitely the easiest. I have read one person making a plywood tank. It was a lot of work.

But yeah that would work too. Can you adhere acrylic to glass for baffles?

i am in school and yes you can just use silicone

Yes and no.
It can be done, but it's not a perfect seal. It is ok for baffles in a sump, but you are better off buying glass.

I have some plywood if you decide to go that route. Give it to you for free too.

How thick is the plywood and how much do you have?

Ahh yes, I always worry about my tank when I leave for a trip hoping nothing major happens when I'm gone. Also, having a controller has eased my worries and eventually I want to use an ip camera for my tank. This hobby is too crazy!

Ok I will think of what all I need and compare prices between glass and plywood.

I know how you feel, i bought the controller just for this trip. I still have my worries though.

You know, you could make a huge sump and set it to the side of the tank. Did you buy a new skimmer yet? That 250 from Bogdan?

No not yet. I'm glad I didn't. I don't have a sump right now to put it in.

Not sure of the price savings of making a wooden sump, usually the cost savings comes from needing a huge 100+ gallon sump to offset what it would cost to have one made. if you want to see what you need to do check out this thread on RC It starts on post 185. You'll soon see that a glass tank from petco petsmart will be a lot cheaper.

You can hang those on the back. That's how my 125 is on my box of rocks.

You've been having a run of bad luck lately. I have had my share, I had my rodi hooked directly to the tank and it was left on over night lowering my SG and flooding my appartment. Good thing I was on the first floor... it happens to all of us.

O that sucks. Hope you didn't lose anything.

I looked at that thread on RC and it looks like I will ne going with a glass tank. To Mich work for me.

yeah there is a lot that can go wrong. especially if you don't seal it properly, then the wood starts to swell and a leak starts.

Darren, we have a couple of old glass tanks that are approx. 15-20 gallons that you are welcome to.. it would at least get you by.. I am also picking up another acrylic sump tomorrow, with baffles and everything.. not sure on the size.. text me what size you are looking for.

I will have to get the measurements again but I would like/prefer 20 gallons. The biggest issue is the stand has a front and rear support and not a lot of room to squeeze a tank in there. I practically need a shoehorn.

and there are ways to temporaraly remove the center brace while a tank is on it full pf water. I will send a link when I get back to work.

I dont agree Jimmy it might get most of it out but i would feel better using a tank i know has never had it in there at all. Pluss a new tank is like 30 bucks so i wouldent even bother tryin to get the copper out

No I have put some corals in.

That's a myth, copper doesn't leech into the glass nor does it get absorbed in the seals. A good cleaning will get rid of it.
