A New Venture - Oceanic 29g HQI Empty A New Venture - Oceanic 29g HQI

Post by Sandman Wed Oct 03, 2012 8:42 pm

As some of you may know I have broken down my 187 and have set up a 29g biocube. It is a lot smaller! But I really like the limitations and opportunities these tanks provide. Its a challenge to place everything, and I can afford to fill it with coral! I don't have a skimmer running because the skimmer Oceanic provides is a joke. I might get a Tunze 9002 eventually, although not sure yet. I will be hooking up a reactor and running GFO and Carbon soon.
    Tank:

    Oceanic 29

    Lighting:
HQI 150 Watt with Phoenix 14k bulb
    Water movement:
    1x MP10

    Livestock:
    2x O. Clowns w/ RBTA
    2x Cleaner Shrimp
    1x lrg Emerald Crab
    Various snails

With this tank I wanted to do something different, something I am really excited about. I took a small rock and crushed it into marble size pieces and scattered them on the bed of the sand in the cove. I then took a frag of each type of zoa and placed them scattered throughout. They will grow over the rocks eventually filling up the space and create a ground cover look. This will look amazing once it gets there, and will make fragging very simple.

I've thought about a crushed live rock bottom, then covered in zoas. I can't wait to see how this turns out, I may be doing it myself! is that a fish need it light? are you going to eventually run led?

who was I talking to about the zoanthid covered crush rock? I can't wait to see it covered. what I'm waiting to see is this Full Spectrum... I hope it grows quickly in your tank so you can drive the price way down.

I might eventually go to LED's and honestly wish I would have kept 1 of my 3 AI's. What was your question about the fish and light?

Thanks Nick, the fragging idea is what will be a great benefit.

Nice - be interesting to see the zoa grow out... An AI nano would cover that entire tank if you like the AI full size. Always worried about the heat with MH but the color almost always looks so sharp. Whereabouts in Oxnard are you?

Unfortunantly I'm not living in Oxnard anymore- I need to change my profile info. I haven't had any issues with heat from the MH. I actually has 3 AI Sols but sold them when I broke down my large tank (I now regret selling all 3). I might buy a Vega eventually or another SOL. I have some new pics ill post after I'm done watching the VP debate.

I think you should look into the Vega, they are full spectrum.

if that were in my tank it would be a colony! Im thinking of buying one letting it grow out for like 6 months and then sell polyps at super low cost.

Vega is nice but might be a bit much for the tak size. I am hopeful they upgrade the nano with multi color spectrum. The one ony frag tank is only at 45% on the white.

It's doing really good, I have a baby that is growing fast.

I don't think it would be too much, the tank is about what the spread is for the Vega/Sol. I switched out the optics on my Sols, and I can't imagine how they would make an upgrade for these fixtures. You would have to dismantle the fixture to change the LED's. I do believe they have an adapter for the wireless feature though. You don't use any blue/Rblue on your frag tank?
