Yellow tubenaria

Hey Guys, do any of you have a yellow tuneinaria? I found a nice one up here in Portland and was thinking of buying it and trying to get it home. But if someone has a nice one they are willing to frag, I may forgo the effort.

Ok. Seems that trying to bring corals back on the plane is a nogo which kinda sucks.

I found a really nice yellow Tubenaria up here that is growing into a vase form. That and they had a toadstool with light blue tips. If I could only find a way to get them home without spending an arm and a leg.

This trip home I'll be redoing the tank and getting it ready for corals so I'll get in touch with you when I'm ready. Thanks.

you can ship them to yourself. From oregon shipping shouldn't be more than 40$ via fedex overnight. Most pet shops should have shipping boxes too.

I take corals on planes often, its pretty easy, just pack it in a cooler in your suitcase.

Yea, that's my only issue. I can get it cheapier at home if I have to pay the extra 40 for shipping. Except maybe the blue toadstool as I've never seen one.

As for the plane, I don't have any luggage that I check, just a carry on backpack. I leave everything else up here till I return. When i do come home for good, I'll be on a ship and so I'll have my luggage with me, no airlines.

Alaska air also charges 20 for a checked bag. Wonder if I buy a small bag and check it, I could put the corals in that. I'll have to do some recon. The airlines already said I couldn't put a bag with water on the plane. But what they don't know won't hurt them.

So have you ever seen a toadstool with a light blue poylops?

Checked bags are reimbursible. Instead of packing it in your luggage buy a cooler ir styrofoam box and check it in.

Ive seen so many kinds of toadstools, yes, blue polyps too. That stuff all depends on the lights and the water.

You can check a cooler, or get a shipping box with styro in it and check that. even easier.

Yea mike, I know checked luggage is reimbursable. But my only luggage will be the coral. .

I may still do it. I'll just have to do some research up here a little more. One question is how do I pack it in a bag of water that it won't move around and get broken?

I'm starting on the tank rebuild when I get home this time so no corals bringing home this go round.

Hand carry a cooler/foam box from home and bring it on your trip. You can wrap the coral in wet paper towels and put it in a ziplock bag.

If you want, I can give you a foam packing box that you get from the wholesalers.

Getting reimbursed for 1 checked bag should be no problem but if you have a elite status on the airline they could waive the first check-in.

What airline are you using? You should have an elite status for the number of trips you have been flying now.

I'm flying on Alaska air. each trip is only 850 miles so I've got a long way to go for eliete status. I talked to the airline and it's a no go for hand carry. TSA won't allow that much water.

I can check it and not tell them it's got water in it and hope is all OK but I'm not supposed to bring any water on the plane.

Now wrapping in a bunch of wet towels may be an option. I know it's been done with Zoa's but I haven't heard of SPS or Softies being shipped liek that. I can get some of teh shipping foam coolers from the store as they have them there and said I could have them. I just want to make sure that I don't get to the airline and wind up loosing my coral.

That and I try not to check baggage so that I'm out of the airport fast. But I may have to make an exception in this one case.

I ship corals in water every week. You just bag it up like you normally would. I make sure my shipped corals are triple bagged for extra protection. There are no rules about water in the luggage and no limits, I have asked several airlines about this. The main limit is the over weight fees you can get if you pack it too heavy. If push comes to shove, tell them that it is fish food too.

If it were me I would take a box with a styro cooler inside and fill it half way with styro peanuts. After you get the cooler filled with coral and everything positioned just right tape it all up and check it as luggage. In the cooler in the hold it should be fine if you tape the styro shut too.

I have tried the wet towel thing with mixed success, SPS and zoas actually work the best, softies the worst. I have other friends who have done it as well with mixed success, you can try it, but if you screw it up you are out the whole colony. Might want to try it on a frag or two first. I personally would do it like I described above. That is how I travel to shows and have not had any issues.

I had called Alaska about teh cary on and teh lady said I couldn't even bring it as checked baggage. But what they don't know, won't hurt them.

So your saying, fill the styrafoam cooler with coral, peanuts and water, Tape it all up, bag it and then box it? Or just tripple bag the coral and put it in the cooler with peantus, then tape up and box?

I'm going to stop by the store this week and talk to them some more and see what they have for shipping so I'll know if I need to buy something or not.

But I'd still like to look at what you have Paul once I get the tank ready to restock.

First time I called southwest they gave me the same thing, but then I spoke with a manager who said that was bunk. They can not limit what you bring on in that way.

Definitely do not put water and peanuts in the styro...it will leak

You gotta bag up the corals, triple bag them, and then put them in a styro cooler with peanuts for cushion. No way if you use the standard 2mm bags that they will rip if they are tripled up. I have never had one rip in probably 500 shipments. Only time bags fail is when they are not bagged enough.
