Dry aragonite/sand
anyone have any recommendations around ordering about 1000lbs of aragonite for deep sand beds? I don't really want to order 66 bags at 15lb ea. Any idea how to tell if the fill sand available at building supply shops would work? That is like $10 for 1000lbs.

I have heard of people using sand from the beach. Though its risky. Try watching rc for people giving away sand.

you can buy bulk from Tats in Ventura, thats what I would suggest. They have 50lb buckets for 44$, but Im sure they would work with you for that much sand.

Re: Dry aragonite/sand
In all honesty, when I first set up my 125, it had play sand from home depot in there for over 2 years before I tore it down to move out here.
I had no problems with livestock mysteriously dying, and corals were thriving.
The downside to play sand is the brown color and that it doesn't have the capability to "buffer the ph" but as I understand it, in order for the sand to act as a buffer the ph has to be way out of what our tanks tolerance needs to be.

Re: Dry aragonite/sand
I used playsand, I ended up with silicates and diatom blooms for 6 months straight. I gave up and restarted my tank. It was awful.
Most places sell 40lb bags (and I think I can get them at that size too)and they arent that bad in price, no need for 15lb bags thats for sure. They 15lb are typically used for the live stuff or small tanks.

Re: Dry aragonite/sand
yep silicates and all. I should note that I was dosing vodka then too, so it might have kept it at bay.clownfish14 wrote:Hmm and it had silicates and stuff in it?

Re: Dry aragonite/sand
Hmm weird. I have heard lots of stories about using play sand and it going wrong and crashing the tank but its cool to know that it has worked before
