Need some opinions. I have been considering mergeing my tanks to help reduce cost and maintenance. What do y'all think?

Shutting it all down would definitely reduce cost and maintenance.

Shutting it all down? I'm thinking of shutting down my 14 gallon and putting everything in the 60 gallon.

why not shut down your 60 and keep to your AIO tank. I would think that it would be cheaper to run the 14 than the 60. Not only that, your 60 isn't exactly reef ready.

I have more corals in the 60 than you think. The 14 is enough space to do what I want.

darren, "reef ready" means that your tank is drilled to support a drain and return for a sump/fuge. it doesn't mean you can't keep coral in your tank. it just separates the freshwater tanks from the saltwater tanks.

Ok. Well I don't plan on drilling it anytime soon. But the 60 provides more room than the 14 for what I want. I'm working on upgrading the skimmer so once I have my sump built and a new skimmer I will work with the hob overflow for now. Maybe once I tear it down to move I will drill it then.

Is your tank acrylic of glass? I have read post of individuals drilling acrylic with water in it. They just created a safety net. Might not be worth the risk, but it's possible. Would you be able to transfer all into the 14, drill the 60, then move everything over, or would you be crowding the 14 to much?

Either way, merging into the 60 is what I would recommend; more flexibility.

It's glass and there is no room to put everything in the 14. Or I could just buy yours and drill it. Lol

That's what I been thinking about doing. Well already done. The 14 is shut down and I have an interested buyer for it but we will see. If not I will post it on here.

Move it all to the 60 and be done.

Also, I ran a non drilled 45G hex glass tank as a reef for years. It had a HOB skimmer w/ no sump. worked out just fine. Wink

I remember aquaclear HOB filters had an awesome surface skimmer attachment when I had my 20L (undrilled). I had a HOB fuge, but never a skimmer... ran fine.
