White LTA being anti-social Empty White LTA being anti-social

Post by Sandman Thu Dec 08, 2011 9:37 pm

I recently purchased a red based, white, long tentacle anenome from a LFS. After attempting to choose a spot for him, although in vain, he choose his own as I suspected. The only thing is that he has secured himself, within 24hr, to a rock on the backside of my aquarium. I can only see him when I peak through the rock work. He has only been in the aquarium for 3 days now. I have good flow in the front and back of tank and I am wondering, should I move him? I didn't purchase him so the wall could enjoy him, although it seems that may be the case.

I attached pictures of the rock work so that I can get feedback. I tried to make it so that fish wouold have good hidding places, and that I would have places for coral placement. I have a MP10 on the lookers left top, and a Polaria 10ML in the mid back wall. Other flow is from the Rena XP4 spray bar and a AquaClear 110.
    Any suggestions?

That is the bad thing about anemones. The go wherever they want to go. You can try and coach him into a position by irritating him with high flow and hope to get him to move. but unfortunately he will go where he wants to.

I will try that, although when I move the power head back to get the "correct flow" it may just go back. I guess it being behind the rock is only going to make feeding more difficult, and the clowns may never be non existant in the tank. It may be a blessing though, at least it wont be taking tours over corals, polyps, and Zoa; at least not yet..

Hopefully he will eventually settle to where you can at least see him.

So today I caught our O.clowns rubbing up on our green star polyp colony. Stinkin clowns!! Anenome posts up behind our rocks, and the clowns are trying to host in star polyps. Gotta love uncontrollable nature.

at least they are hosting, my old clowns wouldn't host for anything. I was told it can take years!

So today during my WC, I decided to do something about the LTA behind my rock. I flipped the rock over, although the flow will be different and it will probably move. I am hoping it will be in a more visable spot now, and I will be able to monitor it. I am not sure if my O.clowns will host the LTA, I may have to add a BTA if they continue on the polyps. I am attempting to control nature, which I believe is only going to cause frustration. This is one of the reasons I started with this hobby; the uncertainty.White LTA being anti-social Photo

I have herad and tried taping a pic of clowns in a nem. It worked for my first clown.

I was desperate to get my clown to host so I tried with in a week of taping it up on the tank it took too the nem.

It also depends on if the clown is wild or captive bred. If it's wild its more likely to host. Wild caught is more likely to have had the flight or fright response ordeal.

I have also heard of putting a few damsels in to help the flight or fright response on captive bred clowns.

I have read it suggested many times, to me it seems far fetched but if it works and you can accredit it to a picture than by all means go for it, however I would just assume that the fish would have came together with the anemone without the pic.....

Yes I tried to host my pair of clowns with a RBTA with no luck and the anemone moved around the tank. Eventually I couldn't find it and was sucked into my overflow and into my filter sock.

Luckily, my clowns love to host my huge frogspawn.

I bought the pair from someone getting out of the hobby so it was easier for them to host.

I figured I would update on how the Enenome is doing. I had flipped the rock so that I could see it, and two days ago it began to move back to where it was before. Apparently the conditions are perfect for it. There is very low flow in it's new location.

Is there another spot in the tank with similar low flow? If so, you could try moving him to that area. Otherwise, maybe put a small powerhead behind the rock so its more flow and he would move somewhere else.

I am thinking about buying one and doing that. It would probably be beneficial anyways to kill the dead spot.
