    Hello all,

I am looking for a Mag 5 or Mag 7 type pump. Any exerternal pump in the spec range of the Mag drive pumps wold work. Will be in a water mixing station so does not need to be high end. It just needs to be able to mix water and pump it to the tank.

I thought that the Mag pumps needed to be sumberged? You could still use it in a mixing station, just put it inside.
If I am wrong, sorry I just read it somewhere on RC(I have a mag 7 on my tank)

Some do not recommend using them externally. It would not be my first choice for a return pump, but for a mixing station / utility pump I do not have a problem with it. I used a mag pump externally for a closed loop system for a couple of years and did not have issues with it.
If another external pump with about the same specs and in the same price range I would be all over it.

I broke off the inlet on my iwaki 20, so I had to hook up my mag 7, and when I did a quick search it said not to put it external(which of course is how my iwaki was plumbed)

How big of a system do you have and why wouldn't you want it on as your return pump?

My current system is only 34 Gal, (until after the new year LOL). I had a system that was around 250 Gal a few years ago.
The mag drive pumps are a bit noisy and might overheat if ran externally full time or have other reliablility issues. If I was to pick a return pump that I wanted to run externally it would be an Iwaki, panworld, etc.
For this project the Mag drive pump will suite my needs I think.
