I need to invest in a test kit. I had always used salifert before but I see that Hana has digital kits, would be nice to not have to read the colors and have numbers to look at. I have read about them on other boards with mixed results. What says you?

I've never heard of digital test kits. What tests do Hanna offer that are digital?

If you do end up getting one/them, can you post about them, I would like to see how they compare.

I use them and they are great. They are very easy to use and are very accurate. Also an even bigger bonus is that since they are so easy to use you actually test your water instead of putting it off because it takes so much time and is a pain in the @$$

is there a calibration of them or is there a certain number of test like traditional kits?

You have two vials each have 5 ml of tank water you start by putting one in the test. This zeros out the test. You then put a package of the powder testing stuff into the vial and shake till its desolved. Next you just stick it in the tester push a button and poof you have your result. It's really easy, accurate, and takes no time at all.

I also use these. I have a alkalinity and calcium kit of the small ones and a low range phosphate meter (the older big one). I love these kits! The prices on the new small testers are very reasonable and so easy to use.

Can you please post a link to these test kits please? I'd like to read up on them. I was hoping someone would tell me which ones they offer to test for.

Is it just for a few things? or can I test for everything?? ie P04, N03, calc, alk, mag, etc.

Each checker is just for one specific thing. The newest one being Calcium

P.S. also, marine depot sells them and so does tom's. most places have them for sale.

yeah, they are great, the phosphate one is particularly great because the old colormetric phosphate kits were useless on low levels of phosphate.

I just picked up the calcium and alkalinity ones from Fantastic Frags, and couldn't wait to use them to see where I stand in comparison with the salifert and red sea. I first used the alkalinity one (which was a good thing because the calcium one is a bit more complicated) alk was easy, placed 10ml of tank water in the vial, place it in the tester push a button to calibrate, then add 1ml of solution that came with the kit (good for 30 tests) mix it and place it in the tester again, push a button and it tells you what the alk is in a digital read out. I had to do a quick calculation to get the DKh.

The calcium was a bit more complicated, the kit came with a 30 ml bottle of solution as well as powder pillows, first I had to add 1ml of solution and 9ml of distilled water (I used RODI) mix it and place it in the tester which calibrated it, them I added .1ml of tank water and then the powder, mixed it until the powder was dissolved, placed it in the tester and pressed the button to reveal a read out of the calcium, there was no calculating on this one, it read it in PPM's.

The test were fairly close to my other test kits, but the good thing about the hanna testers though are that the results are in a digital read out.

I may have to get some of those. How much does it cost to replenish the powders and liquid?

Phosphate and Alk. How do you like the Calcium kit? I have read that it might have some problems.

Yesterday I conducted a test of my own with different versions of calcium test kits. I used an API, 2 different Red Sea kits and the Hanna kit to see where they all range. I was amazed to see that they were all pretty close to each other. Here are the results:
API was 480(1 drop equals 20ppm)
Red Sea was 450 (old style)(1 drop equals 50ppm)
Red Sea was 470-480 red sea (new version)
    Hanna was 487

I could understand some concern with the hanna because you're only adding 0.1 ml of tank water to the tester. but with my findings it seems to be within range. Granted it's not all inclusive and I would like to test this out on other tanks as well to see if the results are similar. But all and all I'm happy with the purchase.

For those of us that have the Hanna calcium checker, this was posted on RC as an alternative to the 0.1 ml of tank water. Once I started getting wavering results a couple months ago I stopped using the Hanna kit. This one seems to have potential as it suggest to use 1ml of tank water, I am eager to try this and see what I get. Hopefully those of you that also have the kit will try it and chime in with what you come up with.

    1. Add 1.0 mL of sample water to Cuvette A of the sample cuvettes using the syringe with the green plunger.
    2. Use the dropper to fill cuvette A to the 10 mL mark with deionized water. Replace the cap and invert the cuvette 3-5 times to mix and set to the side.
    3. Turn the meter on by pressing the button, all segments will be displayed. When the display shows “Add”, “C1” with “Press” blinking, the meter is ready.
    4. Add 1 mL of Reagent A to cuvette B using the syringe with the white plunger. Use the dropper to add 8 mL of deionized water to the cuvette. Replace the cap and invert 3-5 times to mix.
    5. Place cuvette B into the meter, close the lid and press the button. When the display shows “Add”, “C2” with “Press” blinking the meter is zeroed.
    6. Remove the cuvette from the meter and unscrew the cap. Fill the syringe with the green plunger to the 1 mL mark with sample from cuvette A and discard what remains in the Cuvette. Add the 1mL from cuvette A to cuvette B.
    7. Add 1 packet of Reagent B to the cuvette B. Replace the cap and shake vigorously for 15 seconds or until the powder is completely dissolved. Allow air bubbles to dissipate for 15 seconds before taking a reading.
    8. Place cuvette B back into the meter and close the lid. Press the button. The meter displays calcium concentration in ppm.

I'm surprised how close your results are when comparing other test kits to the Hanna Calcium checker. Is the Salifert test way off? I test my tank water (Ca) at 420-450ppm but the Hanna checker is 500+.

So, there is no issue with using DI water? I will try out the modified procedure if there are changes.

After posting those results I have been getting inconsistent readings, even one right after the other. So I stopped using the kit. Still waiting on a fix from Hanna but this one seems to have potential, we’ll see.

I have only used my Hanna Calcium checker once because of the results. Its an expensive tester when its not even close in my case. I still have to try to use lab grade reagent water and see if there is any difference.

How is that consistent? Can your tests read that high? The salifert test only goes up to 500.
