    Adding legs to an aquarium stand Empty Adding legs to an aquarium stand

    Post by alexwbush Tue Jul 31, 2012 1:23 am

    I bought a 75 gallon (36"x24"x20") with a 36"x20"x30" stand. The stand is a pretty solid wooden build, but I think it is too low. You have to sit down or really bend over to look at the front. I was thinking about adding four to six 4-6" legs.

    Maybe something like this: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202528840/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=leg&storeId=10051#.UBdjKrSe7d0

    Thoughts?

    Ash is a very strong wood, That said you may need more support underneath the stand you would definitely need to add at least 6.

    yeah, I was thinking 6. If I calculate correctly... 75gal display + 30gal display = 850ish lbs

    maybe load test them first if one will hold over 280lbs you should be more than fine. How I got this was double the expected weight:
    850x2=1700 1700÷6=283.33333

    So in theory if the each will hold at least 283.3 lbs you should be more than fine.

    I am fairly certain the leg will hold that much weight

    I wouldn't be as worried about the weight on the wood as I would the joint that holds the wood in place. if you bump up against it will it handle the bump or will the legs break off from the weight?

    Is the inside of the stand built well enough to hold the sump or whatever is inside the stand?

    What about building a "box" to set the stand on?

    The legs should hold, three across the front and three across the back. If you are going to set something inside of the stand, like a sump, you may want to put one leg in the center too.

    Agreed, I would build a torsion box that is 6" tall, that way you will have full support under the stand.

    I thought about building a box, but then I said... how great would it be to be able to get under the stand if I needed to (if water dripped or leaked... it wouldn't be stuck between the stand and the floor).
