EMERALD CRAB EATING MY CORAL!! Empty EMERALD CRAB EATING MY CORAL!!

Post by Sandman Fri Feb 10, 2012 11:48 pm

I just caught my emerald crab eating polyps off my pocillipora! I thought it was losing polyps for other reasons; this is comforting. There is plenty of bubble algae to eat, but he goes for the easy meal I guess. Luckily he was in a spot that he couldn't get away from me.

He is now bunking with the six-line wrasse.

I guess that's a possibility, although I watched him for a few minutes from numerous angles. I thought he was picking around the back side at something on the rock, but the he crawled on top of the coral and was clearly picking at polyps. I other peoples posts with similar experiences. I should have taking a video of him, but I acted swiftly. Either way, I'm not taking the chance. I'll have to find another way to get rid of bubble algae.

Yeah that sucks! I caught my hermit crab eating/destroying my sunset monti. I thought the coral was dying because of something else but caught him at night.

Just for updating purposes and to give some credit to these crabs. I added two more to my tank-large. They are devouring my bubble aglae, although knocking things over in the process but still effective. They are NOT touching any corals. I decided to take another chance because this stuff is taking over and this seemed to be the best option to ride my rock of this algae.

Crabs are typically known as scavengers, they will eat stuff that is dead, dying or opportunistically tasty to them. Thats not to say they wont eat corals, but usually if they are eating it, its because its already dying.
