Curious what you guys prefer regarding feeding.

Post by steyely on Fri Feb 22, 2013 11:44 pm

I've heard a lot of back an forth on the subject of "dirty food water" causing increases in phosphates. Personally I just wait for the cube to thaw in a small 1/4 cup container then give it a swirl and dump it in. One day I'll actually test the water for PO4, but I just don't really see how that small amount could make a difference in a 90+ gal system especially when I know most people run carbon/phosban rx regularly (including myself.) Anyways, thought I'd ask and see what everyone else's thoughts were on the subject!

Edit: for some reason the poll text question text and background is black. It should say "Do you strain the old water from frozen food before you feed?"

Definetly suggest fauna Marin zoa/ricordea/chalice powder I'm getting incredible polyp extension and response from all of my coral when I spot feed. In my 8 years in the hobby I have never seen such a response to coral food. You use very little and it goes a long way. Got my bottle of it on eBay for 28$ shipped. It's honestly the best thing I have bought for my reef in a long time. I want to try the lps pellets now. I'm doing less frozen food and more of the powder. In my 6 gallon it doesn't change the parameters because I use very little which has always been a problem

I just dump it in. I remember seeing something somewhere where the vendor had said not to rinse it. I don't even thaw it though LOL, just plop it in....

When I feed frozen, I turn off the return pump and throw it in same for when I feed pellets. That way it dosen't go down the overflow.

Same for me on my old tank, this one is an all in one, so I don't bother turning it off.

Okay cool, thanks for the replies and advice so far! I have my reef controller setup to turn the return off then the auto feeder goes off about a minute later on a daily basis. I'm wondering if this is causing excess nutrients in my tank. I feed a different frozen cube every 3 days to diversify the tank diet, but now I'm beginning to wonder if running the auto feeder on a daily basis is a bit much.

What I've read, as long as your removing it, within reason, it doesn't matter how much you feed. Some people put to manyfish in their tanks and get away with it because they run a larger skimmer. If your keeping up with maintenance and water changes I don't see why you can't feed heavy.

In my 34g tank i use a small pinch of flake in AM and a cube of frozen (myssi, brine, etc) in the evening.

A few times a week I replace the pinch of dry or frozen with oyster feast, Arctipods, phyto feast.

I skim as heavy as I can with a nano skimmer, but mainly rely on weekly 5g water changes to keep my tank in check.
